How to become a Digital Self Defence Master?

All scams start with something small. A message saying your account needs verification. A call from an unfamiliar number claiming to be your bank. A link promising cashback or a lucky draw. In just a few minutes, what seems harmless can turn into a loss that takes months to recover from. Every day, thousands of people across India fall victim to digital fraud. Scammers are clever and fast, constantly finding new ways to trick even the most careful users. The good news is that you can still fight against the most advanced scams and become a digital self-defence master.

A CSR initiative by KVB, cyber security campaign explains how to become a Digital Self-Defence master and help people recognise the red flags, build awareness and take charge of their online safety. It all starts with awareness and following a few simple habits.

  1. Do not accept international calls or video calls from unknown numbers
    Many frauds begin with a friendly voice on the other end of the line. They might claim to be from a financial institution or say you’ve won a reward. Genuine banks or authorities will never call from random international numbers or ask you to verify your account over a video call. If something feels odd, it probably is. Hang up and stay safe.

  2. Do not share your card number PIN password OTP or CVV with anyone
    Scammers often pose as customer service executives and sound polite or professional. But no bank will ever ask for these details. If someone says, “Your account will be deactivated unless you share your OTP, ” it is a clear sign of fraud. Treat your information like your wallet, valuable and private.

  3. Do not click on links or scan QR codes received through messages or social media
    Messages claiming you’ve won cashback or a discount can be tempting. But clicking unknown links or scanning random QR codes can instantly give scammers access to your account. Always verify the source. If it isn’t from an official bank communication, delete it.

  4. Do not share your personal details or bank account details with anyone
    Scams often come disguised as job offers, loan approvals or investment opportunities. You may be asked to share your Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details “for verification. ” Do not share them. No genuine organization will ever ask for such information through calls, messages or social media.

Even if you follow these habits, sometimes fraudsters can still get through. If you ever lose money, don’t panic. Act quickly and call 1930, the National Cyber Crime Helpline or visit cybercrime.gov.in The faster you report, the better the chances of tracing and freezing the fraudulent transaction. Acting swiftly not only protects you but can prevent others from becoming victims too.

The biggest red flag in any scam is urgency. Scammers use fear and haste to make you slip. If someone pressures you to act immediately, pause and ensure if it is trustable.
